Stimulus checks still available

The Internal Revenue Service is trying to reach about 40,000 Kansans who are eligible for federal economic stimulus checks but haven’t filed tax returns to claim the money.

The IRS says retirees, disabled veterans and low-wage workers are eligible for the check but might not know it or might think it’s too late to get a payment.

People who have no tax liability and no tax filing requirement – but who earned at least $3,000 last year – could still receive a minimum payment of $300 for individuals or $600 for married couple filing jointly, plus $300 for each qualifying child.

Maximum payments are $600 for individuals and $1,200 for married couples, plus $300 for each eligible child younger than age 17. All eligible persons, including qualifying children, must have Social Security numbers. Also, people cannot be claimed or be eligible to be claimed as a dependent on another’s tax return.
