From the Lawrence Daily World for Aug. 9, 1908: “The corn crop is made. A rain worth thousands and thousands of dollars to Douglas County farmers began falling last night and continued through the night and into this morning. It was a steady, soaking rain, the kind that makes corn cribs fairly groan under their burdens when harvest is over. There was not a single local farmer who did not wake up happy this morning. : Company H of the National Guard will leave Monday for the annual training at Fort Riley. The Lawrence detachment will be the largest sent out from any Kansas town and a great deal of work must be done before the departure. : The U.S. Forest Service has a plan for the use of worn-out farms in the country with the planting of many trees to bring the areas back to life. Norway spruce has been selected as the tree to be featured in the conservation effort.”
