Chicago – Mark Buehrle took a shutout into the eighth, and Chicago handed Jon Lester his first loss in 21â2 months, hanging on to beat Boston.

The Red Sox embarrassed the White Sox the last time they met, outscoring them, 46-7, while taking four games at U.S. Cellular Field last Aug. 24-26. It was a different story this time.

Athletics 4, Tigers 2

Detroit – Brad Ziegler tied the Athletics’ record for consecutive scoreless innings at 37, and Oakland snapped its 10-game losing streak.

Emil Brown homered, and Rajai Davis drove in two runs for Oakland, which hadn’t won since July 27 against Texas. Marcus Thames homered for Detroit, which has lost seven of its last eight.

Angels 10, Yankees 5

Anaheim, Calif. – Torii Hunter had four hits with a home run and four RBIs, and Howie Kendrick tied a career high with four hits. Vladimir Guerrero had three hits and scored three runs for the Angels, who increased their AL West lead to a season-high 13 games after Texas’ 9-1 loss at Baltimore.

Indians 5, Blue Jays 2

Toronto – Anthony Reyes won his Cleveland debut, helping the Indians beat Toronto. Ben Francisco and Shin-soo Choo each had two RBIs, and the Indians rebounded from a 10-7 loss at Tampa Bay on Wednesday night. In that game, the Rays scored six runs in the ninth.

Acquired from St. Louis in a July 26 trade that sent right-hander Luis Perdomo to the Cardinals, the right-handed Reyes (1-0) allowed one run and seven hits in 61â3 innings.

Orioles 9, Rangers 1

Baltimore – Jeremy Guthrie allowed one run in seven innings to win his third straight start, and Kevin Millar homered twice. Brian Roberts, Juan Castro and Ramon Hernandez each had two RBIs for the Orioles, who have won seven of 11. Aubrey Huff went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 16 games, one short of his career high.

Rays 5, Mariners 3

Seattle – Carlos Pena hit his 21st home run and drove in another run, and Tampa Bay increased its lead in the AL East to 31â2 games. Tampa Bay’s lead over second-place Boston is its largest since July 7.
