Baldwin City shooting victim out of hospital

A 32-year-old Baldwin City man injured in an early Saturday morning shooting was released from Kansas University Hospital on Monday evening.

The man was taken by helicopter ambulance with a bullet wound to the head. Brian L. Pitts, 35, a neighbor of the injured man, was arrested by Baldwin City police soon after the shooting and was charged in Douglas County District Court with aggravated battery.

Baldwin City police have declined to reveal most of the details surrounding the shooting that occurred about 5 a.m. Saturday in the basement of Daniel Sumner’s home in the 200 block of Elm. Numerous shots were fired, but only one struck Sumner, police said.

Mike McKenna, Baldwin City’s police chief, has said that Sumner was struck in the head by a bullet that grazed him and tore back his scalp.
