Cheerless leaders terrorize Texas

“Fab Five: The Texas Cheerleader Scandal” (8 p.m. tonight, Lifetime) is so cheesy, predictable and unoriginal that I couldn’t keep my eyes off of it.

I don’t get the subtitle. Nobody speaks with a trace of a Texas accent, and no references are made to that state’s distinctive culture or locales.

This tale of teen tantrums, girls gone wild and brats without boundaries could take place anywhere.

A clique of five self-absorbed cheerleaders becomes the scourge of the school corridors until a new teacher, Emma (Jenna Dewan), arrives to coach the squad. At first, she has the support of the high school principal (Tatum O’Neal), but not for long.

Many teens-out-of-control movies resemble horror movies, where bad behavior is punished in the end, often gruesomely. “Fab” unfolds more like a Western, with Emma taking on the role of Gary Cooper in “High Noon.” She’s wearing a star and a white hat, but she soon discovers that everybody in power abandons her when the chips are down.

¢ David Hyde Pierce (“Frasier”) hosts “The Forgetting: A Portrait of Alzheimer’s” (8 p.m. Sunday, PBS, check local listings), a documentary updated since its first 2004 broadcast. Presenting painful anecdotes and a comprehensive history of the affliction, “Forgetting” also offers a harrowing glance into the future. In 2004, the film noted that the number of people with Alzheimer’s had increased from 500,000 to 5 million in less than 10 years. At that rate of proliferation, the cost of caring for patients could consume the entire federal budget by the year 2030.
