Free State hammers SM East

? Free State High’s baseball team erased an early 3-2 deficit en route to a 12-3 pasting of Shawnee Mission East on Tuesday.

Kelson Boyer struck out nine and allowed two hits in six innings in improving to 2-0. Brad Witmer pitched a hitless seventh inning.

Cody Kukuk went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, while Alex Hardman and Tyler Hatesohl each had two hits. Jordan Dreiling had a double and three walks for the Firebirds, who improved to 11-1 despite stranding 14 runners.

“I thought our pitching was good. Kelson threw a nice ballgame and competed well,” coach Mike Hill said. “Offensively while we scored a lot of runs, we didn’t take advantage of a lot of opportunities.”
