Koelbel tied for 12th at Big 12 men’s golf

? Walt Koelbel shot a third-round 73 to lead Kansas University’s men’s golf team Saturday during the third round of the Big 12 Championship. The Jayhawks shot a third-round 298 to move up one spot to sixth place overall.

“We didn’t do quite as well finishing up our rounds today, but we still put together another solid day,” KU coach Kit Grove said. “We had several roller-coaster rounds today, but the guys played well.”

Koelbel, who finished tied for ninth at last year’s Big 12 Championship, fired three birdies on the day and is tied for 12th place heading into today’s final round.

Freshman Brad Hopfinger shot a 77 and is tied for 20th place. Hopfinger will attempt to finish in the top 20 for the fifth time this year.

Freshman Nate Barbee and sophomore Patrick Roth both carded 74s during the third round. Barbee has a three-round total of 226 and is tied for 29th place, and Roth is tied for 36th. Junior Zach Pederson fired an 80 and is in 60th place.

Oklahoma State shot a 283 during the third round and maintained its overall team lead by 16 strokes over Texas Tech. Kevin Tway of Oklahoma State is atop the player leaderboard after firing a third round 70.

The final round is set for today.
