Church’s bell choir to be featured during music festival

It has become a Lawrence musical mainstay.

The 34th annual music festival at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt., returns 7 p.m. Sunday, and it will feature the church’s Plymouth Ringers, a youth bell choir known for its tours across the world.

Other bell choirs and vocal groups, including children’s choirs, are scheduled to perform.

“It’s the most interdependent musical activity that you can be involved in because everybody’s success is directly connected to everybody else,” said Johannah Cox, a ringer in Plymouth’s adult choir and a longtime Central Junior High School band teacher.

The festival is open to the public, and a free-will offering will be taken.

Barbara Kelly, who helped start the Plymouth hand-bell program decades ago, said it was significant the festival lasted for 34 years. Kelly’s son, Bill, a South Junior High science teacher, directs the Plymouth Ringers, made up of about 20 high school students. They toured Europe in summer 2006.

Cox said the longevity of the festival is also a testament to the dedication of the Kelly family in the program.

“This is just a passion for them, and it is so fun to be involved with people who are passionate about what they do,” she said.
