The Central Junior High School Zebras had a strong finish at the state Science Olympiad tournament April 5 at Wichita State University.

Medal winners were Claire Murphy-Beach, two second places; Cal Pfannenstiel, second; Forrest Munro, second; Grace Clark, third; Kylie Puckett, third; Erica Crandon, third; and Olivia Marshal, third.

Other top 10 finishers included Dale Rousell, Ian Gent and Scott Richardson.

Carmel Sivron, team manager, and Brent Crandon and Bob Gent, parent volunteers, assisted coaches Cindy Wilbur, Mandana Ershadi-Hurt and Julie Battaglia.

Nicholas A. Green, a senior at Kansas State University, received a Dean of Student Life Outstanding Graduating Senior Award on April 16. The award was given to 13 graduating seniors who have made a significant contribution to student life at KSU. His campus activities and honors include Cessna Leadership Scholarship 2007 winner, Phi Delta Theta-Kansas Eta Scholar of the Year, Pilot Student Ambassador, competing in the 2006 Region IV SAFECON, Advanced Flight Instructor, Phi Delta Theta-Kansas State Scholarship Chairman, and SIFE International.

Green will graduate in May with a degree in aeronautical technology-professional pilot and a minor in business and aviation safety. He is the son of Jan and Tracy Green, Lawrence, and the grandson of Mary Green, Lawrence, and Bob Broyles, rural Baldwin City.

Ottawa University conducted its Spring Honors Convocation on Thursday.

Area students making the dean’s list for the fall 2007 semester were Shannon Fisher, Lawrence; Joshua Oberhelman, De Soto; Joel VanderVelde, Linwood; and Laura Jeannin, Tonganoxie.

Kamme and Justin Carlsten, Oklahoma City, announce the birth of their son, Cale Justin Carlsten, born March 23, 2008, at Oklahoma University Medical Center, Oklahoma City.

His paternal grandparents are Lisa and Lance Carlsten, Lawrence.

His maternal grandparents are Debbie and Mark Grimes, Wichita, and Robert Kostner, Wichita.

Aubrey Moore, Wellsville, was named to the honor roll for the 2007 fall semester at Missouri University of Science and Technology, formerly the University of Missouri-Rolla, by earning a grade point average of 3.2 or above. She is a sophomore majoring in chemistry.

Cadet Spencer Greenamyre, Lawrence, was promoted to Cadet E-2, Company Rifleman, on April 15 at Wentworth Military Academy and College in Lexington, Mo.

Shannon and Rich Malloy, Austin, Texas, announce the birth of their son, Eldon Charles Malloy, born March 31, 2008.

His maternal grandparents are Chuck and Laurel Krider, Lawrence.

His paternal grandparents are Art Malloy, Audubon, Iowa, and the late Carol Malloy.

Ramon and Glenda Schmidt are the 2008 recipients of the Ottawa University Alumni Association’s Esther Ruth Award.

The Schmidts will receive the award during the Reunion Celebration Alumni Award Banquet on May 3.

The Schmidts were selected for this “volunteer of the year” award because of their service to OU both individually and together. As members of the board of trustees, the couple led the Schmidt Challenge in 2006, making a challenge gift of $250,000, which generated more than $450,000 in additional revenue for the university at a crucial time.

The OUAA Esther Ruth Award was established in 1987 in honor of Esther Ruth Bemmels, who provided service to OU students for more than 30 years.

Bill Myers and the late Alice Myers have been granted honorary membership into the Ottawa University Alumni Association by the OU Board of Trustees. Myers will accept the award during the Reunion Celebration Alumni Award Banquet on May 3.

Bill Myers served on the college faculty between 1954 and 1984 as a professor of sociology. He was also very active in the Franklin County Democratic Party and served as chairman at one time.

Mrs. Myers worked as manager of the college print shop from 1959 to 1977, starting out just two hours per day on a ditto machine and building the center into a full department within one month.

In addition to serving as class sponsors, the Myerses sponsored various social clubs over the years and participated in the College/Parent Program at First Baptist Church of Ottawa.

Students of the Month for March 2008 at Oskaloosa High School were Leah Dissinger and Levi Wade, ninth grade; Chelsie Shackleford, 10th grade; and Whitney Artman and Keri Heston, 11th grade. The students were treated to lunch on April 16 at the Salty Iguana Restaurant in Lawrence.

Oskaloosa teachers Jo Dennett, Laurel Heath and Annette Collins have been awarded continuing education grants from the Paul Gump Professional Development Fund. The grants, $700 each, are awarded to help teachers in the Oskaloosa public schools system attend professional development experiences.

Gump was a professor emeritus at Kansas University and a longtime resident of Oskaloosa.

Suzanne and Jerry Sundbye, Westminster, Colo., announce the birth of their twin daughters, Kara Rae and Ryley Shae Sundbye, born April 3, 2008, in Lafayette, Colo.

Kara and Ryley have a brother, Jaydon Tyler Sundbye, 2 1/2.

Their maternal grandparents are Dave and Barbara Neff, Lawrence.

Their paternal grandparents are Keith and Elaine Sundbye, Halstead.

Students of the Month for April 2008 at Oskaloosa High School were Sean Kratchman, ninth grade; Shelby Leonhard and Breanna Robbins, 10th grade; and Danielle Jolliff, 12th grade. The students will be treated to lunch on Wednesday at Chili’s restaurant in Lawrence by the OHS Letterman’s Club.

McKinley Markley, a second-grader at Marion Springs School in Baldwin City, was awarded first place in Kansas Farm Bureau poster contest in the state for Division I. The subject of her poster was “If you’re on fire, stop, drop and roll. Do not run.” She is the daughter of Kevin and Lori Markley, Baldwin City.

Tyler Cordts, Overbrook, was named to the dean’s list for the 2007 fall semester at Central College in Pella, Iowa.

To be named to the dean’s list, students must have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. He is a junior studying history.

Jane Robinson, R.N., B.S.N., Kansas University School of Nursing master’s student, was presented with the Roma Lee Taunton Medal on April 11 at the Student Research Forum’s awards banquet at KU Medical Center.

Robinson, of Lawrence, was awarded the first place medal for her podium presentation, “The Therapy Related Symptom Checklist for Children (TRSC-C) in Outpatient Clinics: Descriptive Study.” Robinson’s research colleague is Catherine Powell, R.N., B.S.N., a master’s student from Wichita, and their faculty mentor is KU School of Nursing professor Phoebe Williams, R.N., Ph.D., FAAN.

Katherine Heacock, Lawrence, was named to the college scholar list at Greenville College in Greenville, Ill. To be named to the college scholar list, students must be a junior or senior, have a grade point average of at least 3.5 and have made the dean’s list for three or more consecutive semesters. Heacock is a senior majoring in music education.

Several area students earned academic honors for the fall 2007 semester at University of Iowa in Iowa City.

Those named to the dean’s list by earning at least a 3.5 grade point average were Allie Ludvigson, Baldwin City, and Arna Hemenway and Katelyn Truscello, both of Lawrence.

Bonnie Toplikar, Lawrence, was named to the president’s list by earning at least a 4.0 grade point average.

Sarah Norris, of Basehor; Megan Urban, Eudora; and Jennifer Crawford, Katherine Johnson, Jenna McGovern, Werner Nelson and Matthew Pottorff, all of Lawrence, were named to the dean’s honor roll for the fall 2007 semester at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb. To be named to the dean’s list students must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

Albert Prescott, Basehor, was named to the dean’s list for fall 2007 semester at Upper Iowa University of Fayette, Iowa. Prescott attends the university’s Fort Leavenworth Center. To be honored, a student must earn a minimum 3.50 grade point average.

Jennifer Hornbaker and Collin Schmidt, both of Lawrence, were named to dean’s list for the 2007 fall semester at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, by earning a grade point average of at least 3.50. Hornbaker is a junior majoring in journalism and mass communications, and Schmidt is a senior in finance.

Jessica Nichols and Anna Norberg-Eskilson, both of Lawrence, were named to the dean’s list for the 2007 fall semester at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo. To qualify for the dean’s list, a student must earn at least a 3.5 grade point average. Nichols is a senior majoring in biology, and Norberg-Eskilson is a senior in vocal music.

Shannon Fisher, Lawrence, a student at Ottawa University, has been nominated for recognition in the 2008 edition of “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.”

Following submission of a profile, each student nominated becomes eligible for one of 10 $1,000 scholarships that will be randomly selected by an independent judging organization in May.

Guy Kirby Montgomery, Eudora, was named to the dean’s list for the fall 2007 semester at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Mo., by earning a grade point average of 3.5 or above.

Wichita State University announces local students named to the dean’s list for the fall 2007 semester, for earning at least a 3.5 grade point average. They were: Molly McKechnie, De Soto; Kaleb Niedens, Eudora; Melissa Kramer, Brandon Mcguire, Matthew Pelsma, Larissa Seay, Jamie Stanclift, Jason Ware and Lauren Wickliffe, all of Lawrence; and Rosston Eubank, Oskaloosa.

Emily Baker, De Soto, was named a Cardinal Scholar Athlete for the fall 2007 semester at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo. To qualify for this honor, students must maintain a 3.0 grade point average. Baker, a senior, is a nursing major and on the softball team.
