Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for April 19, 1908: “The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe passenger train No. 1, the California Express, due here yesterday afternoon, was wrecked at Toluca, Ill. B. Coppess of Chicago, one of the oldest engineers in the service of the Santa Fe, was scalded to death. Frank Minnick, the fireman, was seriously injured and eight passengers were hurt, though none critically. : The announcement by the KU band of a barn dance next week in the gymnasium caused many to ask, ‘What in the world is a barn dance?’ Simple enough: It is the old-fashioned schottische revived to do service for the present generation.”
