Hommell breaks tie; Kansas tennis clips Huskers, 4-3

For the fourth time this season, senior Lauren Hommell broke a 3-all tie with a victory at No. 6 singles, sending Kansas University to a 4-3 victory over Nebraska on Friday afternoon at First Serve.

KU improved to 8-12 overall, 4-6 in the Big 12.

Hommell, as she did in KU’s victories over Kansas State, New Mexico and Oklahoma earlier this season, clinched the dual for the Jayhawks. After falling in a hard-fought tiebreaker in the first set, the Roswell, Ga., native came back to dominate the next two sets against NU’s Maria Ring, improving her dual-match record to 9-5.

Also coming up big for Kansas on Friday was junior Yuliana Svistun, who battled back after losing badly in the first set of her No. 5 contest to defeat Nebraska’s Amber Chandronnait, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.

KU opened the day by recording a sweep of doubles play. The Jayhawks’ No. 1 tandem of senior Elizaveta Avdeeva and Edina Horvath defeated NU’s Imke Reimers and Jana Alba, 8-4, giving Avdeeva her 22nd-career Big 12 doubles victory, which is now tied with Julia Sidorova for most in school history. A win Sunday would make Avdeeva Kansas’ all-time leader.

Hommell and Kunigunda Dorn won their No. 2 doubles contest, as did Svistun and Magdalena Tokarczyk in the No. 3 slot.
