From the Lawrence Daily World for April 17, 1908: “E.J. Hess, a Coffeyville businessman who is interested in the company that proposes to build a trolley from Coffeyville through Lawrence, is here for several days talking to businessmen interested in the transportation project. : Two men today held up the Chautauqua, Kan., Citizens State Bank and locked the cashier in the vault, then just rode away. The alarm did not sound until they were gone.”
