Tax stress
As Tuesday’s tax deadline approaches, the American Psychological Association reminds us that many people feel stress over money. In face, a 2006 APA survey found that money is the top source of stress for adults, with 60 percent of people attributing their stress to money and work. Here are some suggestions for dealing with that stress:
¢ Identify money stressors – Understand what triggers your stressful feelings.
¢ Recognize how you deal with financial stress – Look for patterns of behavior – especially unhealthy ones such as smoking, drinking or overeating – and be aware of those.
¢ Understand what money means to you – Define its value and what it represents in your life.
¢ Find healthy ways to manage stress – Those might include exercise, talking with friends and family or whatever else might work for you.
¢ Ask for professional support – Whether it’s talking to a financial planner or psychologist, professionals can help you with your stress.
