Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for April 13, 1908: “In most local churches yesterday, women wearing the big Merry Widow hats silently defied the dictum of the Ministerial Alliance that all hats should come off during services. In only one church, however, was the subject of obstructionary headgear mentioned from the pulpit. In that one instance, the ladies almost unanimously complied with the request to remove the big hats. It is said that the result was one of the most interesting and effective services ever held in a Lawrence house of worship.”
