Old Home Town – 25 years ago

Newly elected City Commissioner David Longhurst was voted the new mayor of Lawrence by the City Commission. He succeeded Marci Francisco who had not sought re-election and then had failed as a general election write-in candidate.

City Commissioner Barkley Clark announced his resignation, as expected, and the commission quickly approved a system to take applications for his replacement. Clark, a former mayor and 10-year commissioner, was leaving because he was moving to a Kansas City law practice, which left him ineligible to serve here. There was no immediate indication who would succeed him.
