Old Home Town – 25 years ago

To date, Kansas University had fallen short of its budgetary goals in the Kansas Legislature, but there seemed to be general agreement that the school had fared better than expected after early setbacks in the funding process. The big question that remained was what faculty-staff salary increases and benefits might be included in the final tabulations.

The City Commission was still pondering whom to elect as mayor. Incumbent Nancy Shontz seemed the logical choice. There were three new members. Barkley Clark was resigning to move to a law practice in Kansas City and there was some doubt Shontz would be chosen even though she normally would be in front of the line of succession.
