Power outages reported in Lawrence

About 20 residents remain without power in areas around Sixth and Iowa streets at 10: 30 p.m.

Following a severe storm that blew through Lawrence, about 50 residents in that area were without power, according to Westar Energy.

Erin La Row, a spokeswoman for Westar Energy, said the outages were the cause of strong winds, lightning and trees that fell on power lines. Crews were assessing the damage and making repairs at about 9 p.m.

Douglas County was under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 8:45 p.m.

A severe storm passed through Lawrence quickly, said Sarah Jones, 6News meteorologist.

“We had a lot of lightning,” she said. “The storm was moving very fast, which is good because it could have done more damage.”

Before the storm entered the Lawrence area, Jones said there were wind reports of 70 mph from Osage County.
