From the Lawrence Daily World for April 10, 1908: "The stockholders of the local Weber Brothers Piano Co. will prosecute the owners who have been dismantling the plant with the equipment due to go elsewhere. It is believed fraud is involved and local people say they intend to get to the bottom of it. : Burglars have been busy here. Several homes have been broken into of late and two stores have been hit. No arrests have been made although there are several suspects, officials say. : Despite rumors, a man being held in the local jail to face a murder charge did not escape today. He remains locked up. : J.W. Dent of Linwood last night was struck by Santa Fe Train No. 6 and instantly killed in the passageway between the Bowersock Mills and the bluff south of the tracks. He had inquired about train schedules and apparently was on the tracks rather than a sidewalk en route to the depot when he was hit and killed instantly."
