National League Roundup: Mets drop final opener at Shea

Phillies 5, Mets 2

New York – Carlos Delgado and the New York Mets botched the final home opener at Shea Stadium the same way they squandered a big lead in the NL East last year. Jamie Moyer pitched six effective innings, Jayson Werth hit a tiebreaking single and the Phillies rallied past New York with the help of Delgado’s key error in the seventh.

Cardinals 5, Astros 3

Houston – Troy Glaus hit a two-run double in the eighth inning to propel St. Louis. Glaus’ hit, off Geoff Geary (0-1), bounced off the lower portion of the bullpen wall in right-center field and scored Chris Duncan and Albert Pujols.

Rockies 4, Braves 3

Denver – Right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez overcame a shaky start, and Matt Holliday hit two run-scoring singles. Each of the Braves’ five losses so far have come by one run. The Rockies have won three games so far, each by a run.

Brewers 3, Reds 2, 10 inn.

Milwaukee – Rickie Weeks singled home the winning run in the 10th inning, and Milwaukee beat Cincinnati.

With two outs and two strikes in the ninth, Eric Gagne blew his second save in three chances when Corey Patterson hit a homer just over right fielder Corey Hart’s leap to tie the game.

Gagne, who signed a one-year, $10 million contract this offseason to close for the Brewers after Francisco Cordero cashed in with a $46 million contract with the Reds, also blew a save on opening day against the Cubs on Wednesday.

D’backs 10, Dodgers 5

Phoenix – Doug Davis, pitching two days before his scheduled surgery for thyroid cancer, allowed two runs in six innings, and Arizona Dwent on to beat Los Angeles.

Giants 3, Padres 2, 11 inn.

San Francisco – Bengie Molina hit his second homer of the game with one out in the 11th inning.
