Crowd control

Law enforcement officers deserve credit for overseeing a relatively safe celebration of Monday's Jayhawk victory.

The celebration of Kansas University’s national basketball championship in downtown Lawrence was not without incident, but, given the size and excitement of the crowd, relatively few problems were reported.

A few citations were issued for disorderly conduct or driving while intoxicated, but for the most part, law enforcement officers properly concentrated on keeping the crowd controlled and safe. The presence of a large number of officers from both state and area agencies was a calming influence on the crowd that still was given ample opportunity to celebrate the Jayhawk victory.

Officers were good-natured and helpful but intervened when necessary to keep revelers from endangering themselves or others. They ordered people trying to climb light poles to come down but they also were willing to pose for photos with happy Jayhawk fans. It was the right tone for a once-every-20-years celebration. Kudos also go to the Lawrence Public Works Department for the quick after-party cleanup.

It was obvious that many people had consumed more alcohol that they should have and that people who left their cars parked along Massachusetts street had made a bad choice, but for most celebrants, the gathering was a fun and memorable experience.

The KU players did a classy job on the court Monday night, and local law enforcement did an equally classy job of facilitating a reasonably trouble-free celebration of the Jayhawk victory.
