Commission supports earmark for shelter

City commissioners unanimously agreed to write a letter supporting the Lawrence Community Shelter’s efforts to win a $600,000 federal earmark to build a new homeless shelter.

But commissioners made it clear that their letter of support was not an endorsement of any potential site for a new homeless shelter to replace the organization’s current facility in downtown Lawrence.

The shelter has explored the possibility of buying an industrial building near 13th and Oregon streets in east Lawrence. Commissioners said they were reserving judgment about that site until an official proposal was presented.

Shelter director Loring Henderson said his group is interested in that site, but also is looking at other potential locations.

Michael Almon, a member of the Brook Creek Neighborhood Association, told commissioners that the neighborhood association was poised to oppose that site as a location for a homeless shelter.

Henderson is submitting the earmark request through Sen. Sam Brownback’s office. The money would pay for only a portion of a shelter’s cost, which is estimated at $3 million.
