Kansas University Athletic Director Monte Johnson sprang a major surprise by dipping into the professional ranks to hire Larry Brown of the New Jersey Nets as the new KU basketball coach to replace the ousted Ted Owens. Brown, 42, was a North Carolina graduate who had played on the 1964 U.S. Olympic team under Hank Iba.
