Kansas' Elizaveta Avdeeva returns a volley. Avdeeva injured her ankle during her singles match, and KU lost to Texas Tech on Saturday at Robinson Courts.

It was a rough Sunday for the Kansas University women’s tennis squad at Robinson Courts.

From the absence of coach Amy Hall-Holt for family reasons to an injury to senior Elizaveta Avdeeva late in her No. 2 singles match, KU just didn’t have enough to fend off Texas Tech in the end.

The Red Raiders rallied for a 4-3 victory.

“We won some very good matches and started strong in doubles,” KU assistant coach German Dalmagro said following the loss. “I’m not disappointed in any of these players. I think they fought really hard through everything and competed. We didn’t have our head coach, they were very sad for her, and the way they played would make her very proud.”

While attempting to send her singles match to a third set, Avdeeva injured her ankle during a volley in a second-set tiebreaker against Tech’s Kelsy Garland. Avdeeva eventually played out the final point and fell, 6-4, 7-6 (6).

“It was a very good match, and it was sad to see her go down and not be able to really come back and play,” Dalmagro said. “It’s unfortunate, but it happens. She was coming back, and I thought she could have won the set, and then she went down. All the players then kind of felt the same pressure.”

The Jayhawks seemed to have the match well in hand prior to Avdeeva’s injury.

After winning the doubles point, Kansas got two quick victories from junior Yuliana Svistun (6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 singles) and senior Lauren Hommell (6-4, 6-3 at No. 6 singles) and needed just one more singles victory.

Kunigunda Dorn was in line to earn the clinching point after winning the first set at No. 4 singles. TTU’s Simone Templeton turned the tables on Dorn, however, winning the second and third sets in convincing fashion.

KU freshman Magdalena Tokarczyk also had a shot in her No. 1 singles match to get Kansas the victory. After dropping the first set, Tokarczyk lost just one game in the second set.

But the Red Raiders’ Samantha Van der Drift earned the clinching point by winning the third set for a 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 victory.
