From the Lawrence Daily World for April 7, 1908:
“Twenty representative stockholders in the Douglas County Fair Association today voted unanimously to favor holding a county fair this fall. Receipts last year fell about $1,500 short of paying expenses but every premium was paid in full and the shortage was made up from the sale of stock. Things look better for this year. :
“The safe in the bank of Huron, Kan., was blown open by robbers earlier today and the robbers made their escape on a rail handcar, with citizens awakened by the explosion following on foot and shooting at them. Two suspects were later arrested in Topeka. . . .
“A loafer who has been in jail several months for annoying women on the local streets has resumed that cheerful occupation upon being released from jail, where he is due to return immediately. . . .
“Within 10 days, Bell Brothers’ piano factory will be working the largest number of men the factory and equipment will permit. Business has been booming and orders have been more than can be met with normal staffs even though they have been turning out at least one piano per day.”
