Place
Cross Town Tavern

1910 Haskell Ave., Lawrence

A 28-year-old Lawrence man was shot early Saturday morning inside Cross Town Tavern, 1919 Haskell Ave., Lawrence police Sergeant Susan Hadl said.

The shooting occurred shortly before 1:30 a.m. Police responded immediately and found that both the suspect and the victim had left the scene.

The victim obtained his own transportation to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where officers were standing by. He was later transported by air ambulance to a Kansas City hospital, police said. His injuries are not life-threatening.

The suspect, a 22-year-old Lawrence man, later called police. He reportedly was released.

Further attempts to reach police have been unsuccessful. More details as they become available.

OKay gangster OOHGEE I know all and I mean all about the BLOCK for over 3 decades and i'm by far NOT on the outside lookin in. and true blue so that means your a CRIP! So lets really keep it real instead of using "code" words. Damien needs body guards Not becuz he's not a Bad mo fo. If he was a bad mo fo he could handle his own business. It's because he's a 27 yo Punk who thinks he's like you true blu (crip) and can't take a old fashion butt whoopin'. And he's scared. And OG if you ain't over 40 years old, and from the way you write, you most likely are not (as you put it) an oohgee. as far as on the outside looking in, damien garrett does have a long record with the douglas county courts. So go do your homework before you speak up for him. Keep it real gangster oohgee tru blu crip

oohgee 6 years ago

to whom it may concern, you are all on the outside looking in and know nothing about what daimen garrett has done in the past or what he was doing in the bar that night. Did he have a gun? No! And bodygards? I have never seen why he would ever need a bodygard! And if he does then he must be a bad moe fo. The boys he hangs with is all from the hood and are all true blue from the BLOCC!!! So keep it real.

The patrons of this bar are of the highest moral integrity. They are law abiding, civic minded leaders of the community. They are role models as scout leaders, coaches of youth sports teams and adult volunteers at school events. They are true positive contributors to society.

angellic007 6 years ago

Oh yea just one more thing. the 'victim" at the bar who was defending himself by shooting the criminal/bodyguard. Called the police within 20 minutes of the shooting and told the police that he shot a man and cooperated with the police totally. Sounds like a "career criminal" to me. Hummmmm?

0

angellic007 6 years ago

Oh yea oldenuf. who ever said that the "victim" (1) didn't call the police after the crime was committed by Mr Garrett originally. (2) who ever said the "victim" was a "career criminal". You speculate and write things about people you know nothing about. and it sounds like you know alot about illegal activity by the "neighborhood" you grew up in. who's to say you aren't invovled in some illegal activity. that's just me speculating :)

0

angellic007 6 years ago

LOOK HERE OLDENUF and ICJAYHAWK!! If you don't know the whole story DONT make accusations on some one just because they had a large amount of money on him. I DO know the WHOLE story and it just so happens the the victim got this money from legal reasons that are not anyones concern. but it involved a car accident nuf said? and the victim of this crime that was robbed of his money had this "large" amount due to engine problems that he anticipated was going to cost him through means where he could pay cash only. So before anyone accuses anyone of illegal activity SHUT THE **** UP. Although I didn't have to write this comment I felt like I should. because not one person has commented on how a victim of a crime who is being harassed, etc is being done wrong. I see where the racist people of lawrence don't care about those who are victims of crimes. It's all about where it happened. and BLACK people and now it's gone into accusing people of illegal active just because they had, WOW 600$ on them. You can't tell me that no one in this town or anywhere else for that matter doesn't carry (at one time or another) supposed large amounts of money if you call 600$ a large amount of money. Why isn't anyone commenting on Mr. Garrett and and the guy who attacked the victim and their legal means of intimidating a witness which is a level 6 felony. If Mr Garrett can't take what he dished out then he shouldn't bring other people in to the situation just because he doesn't want to do the time for his crime.

crossfire so what are you saying ---take the law into your own hand? and has anyone made any comments about the shooting that happened last nite at a residence. just because it didn't happen at a bar no one makes any judgements (just like I stated in my earlier comment) about blacks or hip hop violence. And the shooter got away? But since it didn't happen at a bar it is overlooked. I just see how stereotypical, or should i say racist, lawrence really is. people of this town, where i have lived all of my life, are TWISTED!

I see Gina's (ridiculous) comment about concealed carry being to blame has already been addressed. Thus I will not bother with it. But I fully agree with littlegrace. Haha.

OldEnuf2BYurDad 6 years ago

All this talk about "black" bars is uncool. How is any of that NOT racist? If you don't pull your head out of your butts, you'll never get those brown stains off your KKK hoods. So, let me get this straight. One guy was robbed at gunpoint of $600 CASH by another guy who has bodyguards. The "victim" never intended to call the cops, but a bystander called instead. It's hard for me to imagine that ANY of these characters are NOT involved in some major illegal activity. Yes, it is my right to carry $600 cash in my pocket; but in my old neighborhood, $600 cash in one's pocket meant you were selling drugs, and if it was taken from you and YOU didn't call the cops, then you got that money by illegal means. I never call career criminals "victims".

Gina says "This is why concealed carry doesn't work. Just makes it legal for the thugs to carry guns."These were not legal concealed carry holders. Don't blame it on legal CC holders. Remember, CC holders can not carry in Bars. Only non-CC holders thugs and criminals can carry there. You are not protected inside of bars unless the Police are there.

Green Gables, Red's, Perry's were are all gone and no other places really courted their business - Black folks need hang-outs, too.WOW now that is going WAY BACK.... I was thinking about BBB and the Dog as some still call it. Folks in this town have and always be all about the "blacks are bad for business" they need to put on their big boy pants and deal with it. Not all crime in this town is committed by blacks, those are the crimes that make breaking news. Its just sad that people like to speculate about what they assume just because of the location.

Azure--------THANK YOU!!! Somehow this shooting has become a racial issue. It is not that at all. Also there are just as many "white" or non-"black" people that are patrons of the Cross Town Tavern. If this same situation happened some where other than a bar it wouldn't be this racial issue coming up. What about the "true" victim of this incident no matter where it happened. The victim is being harassed, threatened, and now physically assaulted and shot at because of being a victim/witness to the original crime. What people don't know it that the guy that got shot also shot at the "victim" Also referred to as the "suspect". He just missed.

That bar has always had a large population of black folks. It started as Blues, Brews and BBQ then it became the Laughing Dog. After the Congo burned down that crowd came to the LD. So for most of the time the original owners had it, it didn't have a black majority clientele but it was known as the black hang-out, and for drugs and fighting, etc. But Jim and Kerry did work hard to make the place fun. She'd have theme parties and bring in good bands (Blue 88, Scott Ellison, Bobby Carson). Some of the sh!t people would pull would be aggravating but I didn't feel unsafe in there. I don't know about now though but I don't know the current owners either.Green Gables, Red's, Perry's were are all gone and no other places really courted their business - Black folks need hang-outs, too. The Congo was just or worse as any other dive bar this town ever had, even AJs. If crap happens it does need to be addressed no matter who the clientele is.

The "bodyguard" got shot. As for shutting any bar down in Lawrence the "black" people will always find somewhere in town to party so igby, do you really, think that shutting down the "black" bars in town is going to stop the thug "hip-hop" violence. All the bars, clubs, etc. would have to be shut down. Also I was just curious, from lookin at your profile and your previous entries, dates and times. Your "self employed" Construction business must be pretty slow for you. My construction guys are pretty busy right now and wouldn't have time to stay up half the night and write blogs. everyday several times a day. and Doc1 by "suspect" do mean the "victim" in the situation or the "Criminal" who was intimidating the "victim/witness" and/or his "bodyguards"?

Okay, just for the LMH hater, LMH is not a trauma center. Therefore they fly out all those patients with serious injuries. It said non-life threatening. It does not meant that it is not a serious injury. LMH is are just updating facilities. They'll never be a trauma center.

cross town tavern is just a follow up from the old CONGO BAR from north lawrence over by the tracks. It got tore down so alot of the regulars still go there and I think alot of drug traffic goes on in there plus---alot of fights. Don't think its got anything to do with hip-hop or black people but just a bunch of unmentionable kind of people you really don't want to have a brew with unless you want to participate in the things they do. Not a place I want to hang out anymore. In fact when it changed from the Congo Bar I didn't feel that comfortable or safe in there. Sorry if no one agrees but lived here all my life and know some of the history.

ok, i have been reading all the comment and yes the crosstown has had a lot of problem, but my boyfriend use to own it awhile back and we did not have that many problem but at the end we did and that is one reason we got rid of it because the after 5pm crowd was nothing but black i have nothing what so ever against black but a lot of them were trouble. the day crown are the ones from the Congo and i can say from growing up in the Congo bar from the time i was born until it burnt down that i never had a problem in there and i wish i was still there. when my boyfriend owned it we tried to get rid of the bad crowd but the "owner" now like that crowd enough said Oh if anyone knows me i am THE CONGO BRAT

0

Close this bar and Axis and the hip hop thugs, will leave Lawrence, to go to another town to do their shooting.

0

The crosstown is a drug dealers hook-up place. Has been for years. Drug dealers work there and the place is full of people with arrest warrants. It's ironic that its next door to the state parole office.

So who got shot - Damien or the "bodyguard"?

0

doc1 6 years ago

le. You forgot to include 1908 E 19th and 2200 Harper. I bet anyone $100 bucks that the suspect lived in one of the two. Anyone haning with Damien Garret deserves what they get. But it;s hard to kill a cockroach. If it was an innocent bystander that got shot they would have been worse off.

0

angellic007 6 years ago

Ok I've read the comments this morning. Mainly of people who assume and speculate about what happened in this particular incident. The "shooter" is a victim of a crime committed by Damian Garrett. Earlier in the year Mr. Garrett pulled his gun on the victim twice within 2 days. Not only that he robbed the victim of 600$ (armed robbery). The victim co-operated with the police, after a by stander saw Mr. Garrett commit the crime against the victim, and called the police. The victim has been threated numerous times by others affiliated with Mr. Garrett and Mr. Garrett himself, about the victim testifying in court. As was the situation last night. The victim was asked by Mr. Garrett if they were going to testify against him. Soon after being asked that question at the Cross Town Tavern the victim was assaulted by one of Mr. Garrett's "bodyguards". The victim saw that the man who was assaulting him had a gun. The victim, as well, had a gun. This shooting was a situation of shoot or be shot. Which would you do? SRJ? I guess you would be dumb and get shot! This was not a matter of "hip hop violence". It's a matter of Mr. Garrett violating the law again ------------ aggravated intimidation of a witness or victim!!!!!

0

ok, but seriously, why did he have to get air transportation for injuries that were non-life threatening? is LMH not capable of handling a gunshot wound? seems like most serious injuries are always flown to KUMC or Overland Park Regional, etc. for such a big hospital.. and all that money spent lately on keeping LMH up to date..... come on.

This is the crowd from the old "knife n gun "club that was in north lawrence...it burned to the ground! Been so long ago..i forgot the name of the club!Anyone remember ?But after it burned down ..the rowdy fs migrated to the nieghborhood i grew up in (in the 70s ) and it was a great area until they put the projects (1600 haskell) on old man sams property! Then the crackheads took over the bar and it is a place that only the lowest of life go to..but it flys under the radar..cuz the neighborhood is now the "HOOD"! Hell them scum bags even destroyed edgewood park..I used to find snappin turtles in the creek when i was a kid ...but not now..damn creek has been trashed like the rest of area! My pops would roll over in his grave knowing what the crackhead fs did to the neighborhood! Too bad we cant drop a bomb on the area and start all over...I miss the the way it used to be before 1600 haskell destroyed the area! 2 bad the shooter didn`t finish em all off!!!!!!

Seriously, does this really surprise anyone? It's not b/c Last Call closed or anything. Cross Town Tavern has been and is a trainwreck waiting to happen. We're just lucky it was only one person shot this time. Also, if you look in that mall, shops include: Job start, parole office, cross town, a liquor store and miracle video. . .you do the math.

Since no Taylor-Hobbs residents were not at risk, I guess no need for a special "Breaking News" announcement from the Mayor and Chief Olin.Question: Transported by air ambulance, why? "His injuries [were] not life-threatening." Does LMH and/or Doctor get a kick back for ordering this service? $$$$Suspect: "The suspect ... called police and is currently talking to Lawrence police officers." Yeah, 'cause the police are your friends. Police: "You'll feel better if you just talk." "We just need your side of the story." "Even though you called us and voluntarily came in here, I still need to read you this damn blue card with Miranda rights." "All the other rooms are full, so, yeah we have to sit in this little, windowless room." "Not now, you can call your mother later." "No, that's not a fisheye-lensed camera in the wall." "I need to get some paperwork, so just sit her until I come back (camera & recorder just keep running while suspect makes / receives cell phone calls and talks about facts of case)Next day via video: Hello, Mr. Suspect, this is Judge .... and this is your first appearance, the State has alleged you committed .... your bond is .... Next case!
