Seabury falls at home

Seabury Academy’s girls soccer squad lost its season opener Wednesday at Youth Sports Inc.

But the Seahawks tied last season’s goal total in their first game of the season, a 4-1 loss to Kansas City Lutheran.

“That’s a big thing – you don’t leave a goose egg on the scoreboard,” Seabury coach Gunar Harmon said.

Seabury’s only offense came from seventh-grader Raquel Dominguez, who sneaked in a pass from junior Bria Phipps to take a 1-0 lead late in the first half.

“I really couldn’t believe it when it got in,” Dominguez said. “The ball was coming toward me, and it was just an automatic reflex for me. I just kind of toe-poked it in and prayed it would go in.”

The goal was a bit of a surprise for Phipps, considering the Seahawks didn’t have many offensive opportunities in the first half.

“I definitely think that a lot of times the goals that are just kind of unexpected end up working a lot better than those ones you try to line up and shoot,” Phipps said. “So it just happened to be there off a corner kick, and it just worked out well.”

K.C. Lutheran tied it up just two minutes following the goal and got the go-ahead-goal a few minutes before halftime.

Seabury’s goalkeeper in the first half, eighth-grader Britni Coulter, did her best to keep the Seahawks in contention, making multiple one-on-one saves when the defense didn’t recover on breakaways.

“She’s developing the instincts to play (goalkeeper),” Harmon said of Coulter. “It’s a tough thing to start the first game having never played the position before, and she did a miraculous thing. The unfortunate thing is it doesn’t say how many saves you have on the scoreboard, just how many goals got past you.”
