Old Home Town – 25 years ago

The fate of the Lawrence Opera House took a new turn. Its owner, facing corporate bankruptcy, proposed that it be sold by the end of the year. During a hearing in Topeka, the opera house owner’s attorney submitted a proposal to liquidate Opera House Investments Inc., which owned the building at 646 Mass. According to Peter Curran, attorney for Lawrence National Bank which was suing to foreclose a mortgage on the opera house, the proposal included conducting a sealed-bid sale by Dec. 31. The city was discouraging talk that it should take over the site, but there were rumors of private buyers who might be interested.
