Seabury wins first; Veritas sweeps tri

Veritas Christian senior Kristie Tiegreen spikes the ball over Christ Prep's Kari Dunn. Veritas won both its matches Thursday at Seabury Academy.

The Seabury Academy volleyball squad no longer has a zero in the win column.

In a home triangular against Christ Prep and Veritas Christian on Thursday, the Seahawks swept Christ Prep, 25-14, 25-18, for their first victory of the season.

“It was amazing,” said Seabury’s Bria Phipps, who had four kills and two aces in the match. “I was so proud of my girls.”

Calli Noller led the squad with five kills and three aces.

The victory was short-lived for Seabury, however, as they ended up losing to Veritas, 25-21, 25-14, to finish off the night.

Despite getting off to a quick start in Game 1, the Seahawks gave up 10 straight points late in the game to allow the Eagles to soar past them.

“I was just pleased with our defense,” Seabury coach Craig Friedrichsen said. “A couple of weeks ago I think they would have drilled us. But we’ve gotten a lot better defensively. And then serving the ball we were 31-of-32. We missed just one serve all night against them.”

Veritas also blew through Christ Prep, 25-15, 25-5, behind five aces from both Adrian Willems and Kristie Tiegreen.

Things were made even more difficult for Veritas when in the final game against Christ Prep they lost Emily Zimmerman for the night when she slid into a metal desk.

Taelyr Shelton, who is primarily the team’s libero, had to step in for Zimmerman because she was the Eagles’ only sub.

“With our small numbers when we have somebody get hurt, it really switches up our team, so we didn’t really know how it was going to start out,” Veritas coach Kyle Billings said.

Playing outside of her normal position, Shelton turned in a strong performance against Seabury with a team-high four aces in the match.

“I haven’t served in a game in two years, so that was like the most heart-wrenching thing that I’ve ever had to do,” Shelton said. “But it was really exciting to get in and play something new. I was really excited to play in the front row, and I got my first kill ever. So this has just been an exciting night.”
