Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Sept. 28, 1907: “From Topeka comes news that individual deposits in Kansas banks, state and national, are $20 million greater now than they were a year ago. ‘Never has there been so much prosperity in Kansas,’ said bank commissioner John Q. Royce. ‘The banking business reflects the general condition of the people of Kansas and this report speaks volumes of good things for our state.’ Kansas lists 736 state banks and 203 national banks doing business. : It looks as though Lawrence High School is going to wake up once more and have a real live football team in the near future. The students are enthusiastic, the faculty seems much interested and prospects are bright. There seems to be plenty of good material at the high school and those who have played the game at any level seem excited. But there is the issue of money and until funds can be found we can expect little. Many from Lawrence go on to the university and a high school program could benefit KU.”
