VA hot line offers mental health help

A crisis intervention hot line has been set up by the VA Heartland Network to assist veterans dealing with difficult issues.

The hot line will also aid family members or friends of veterans who need help assisting a veteran who has mental health issues or other problems.

The new hot line expands the services previously available with a specific focus on the mental health of veterans returning from Iraq, Afghanistan or elsewhere in the war on terror.

Registered nurses with training in crisis intervention and telephone care are available around the clock to talk with callers. They also will offer assistance in accessing health care provided by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs or within local communities.

The hot line number is (888) 899-9377.
