Haskell volleyball swept

Haskell Indian Nations University outside hitter Amber Benallie (5) has a spike blocked by College of the Ozarks defenders Jennifer Nichols, left, and Laura Stepp. The Bobcats swept the Indians on Monday at Coffin Complex.

At least Haskell Indian Nations University’s volleyball team didn’t suffer long.

College of the Ozarks swept the Indians, 3-0 (30-10, 30-17, 30-16), in a match that took just over an hour to complete Monday at Coffin Complex.

“Our girls just faced a faster team, and we were able to play with them every now and then, but we’ve got to pull it together to play with them all 30 points,” Haskell coach Melissa Peterson said. “Hopefully after this game they’ll be able to see that it doesn’t only matter the first couple of points, but it matters throughout the whole match.”

HINU (2-7 overall, 1-2 in conference) had trouble attacking College of the Ozarks, which translated into a large disparity in kills. The Bobcats more than doubled the Indians’ output in kills: 42-20.

“Our passes weren’t really there, and we have to feed off our passes,” said Takara Bighorse, who had a team-high six kills. “That’s one thing we should work on – and do work on a lot. But we were just off today. We just couldn’t pass.”

Samantha Logg was the team’s main source for setting up the Indians with 12 assists.

Haskell also had 27 hitting errors.

“They have a lot of good talented blockers that were especially a lot taller,” Peterson said. “They were just able to put up the block, and we just weren’t able to see. We kept hitting into the block when we shouldn’t have. It was just little things that we are still working on that they haven’t gotten hold of yet.”

“If you see a big block up like that, you kind of try to hit around them. Sometimes when you try to hit around them, it’s going to go out and whatnot. But I think that has a lot to do with it.”

Peterson did find one silver lining in the lopsided loss: few service errors. Her squad limited its mistakes from the service line to just four.

“The other night we probably missed like eight, compared to our four tonight,” said Peterson, whose squad also had five service aces. “I think the girls are just getting more confident on the serve. They know that in order for us to stay up there they’re going to have to serve tough.”

Haskell continues conference play this weekend with two matches in Nebraska. The Indians will face Bellevue University on Friday and College of Saint Mary (Omaha) on Saturday.

“We have three days of work and need to learn something from it, and hopefully our next game we play a lot harder,” Peterson said.
