Common sense

To the editor:

The city should stop trying to protect downtown. If you have a product people want at a price they can afford and feel safe shopping there, they will come.

The T bus should use smaller buses. This would be more efficient, would cost less and still provide public transportation.

Every year when Kansas University starts, many businesses (mostly banks) put out signs that say, “Welcome Students.” Why not a sign that says, “Welcome Everyone”?

Roundabouts were put in for traffic calming. We have that in law enforcement. We can’t afford both.

Stop improving conditions for the homeless. If you have two hotels, one a lot nicer than the other and both are free, where would you stay? That is Lawrence. Give the homeless a dust pan and a broom. Have them go downtown to sweep up. Give back to a community that gives them so much.

If you work and fail a drug test, you lose a paycheck or could be fined. Why can’t we require homeless to pass drug tests before getting freebies?

When I speak up for senior issues, I get criticized. Common sense says a lot of seniors can’t get a job because of their age or health. Common sense says Lawrence is a great place to live because of some of these seniors. Common sense says that those who criticize seniors, if their health holds out and they are lucky, will someday be a senior citizen.

Common sense tells me that when we make a lot of our decisions we do not use common sense.
