Old Home Town – 100 years ago
From the Lawrence Daily World for Sept. 23, 1907: “The 1907 Douglas County Fair is being judged as the finest event of its kind in local history. And planners already are saying they will have an even bigger and better fair next year. Every department has been a success and crowds in most all cases set records. : Kansas and Missouri university officials are meeting with officials of Joplin, who want the KU-MU football there on Thanksgiving. The schools ruled out returning to Kansas City this year because of a fee gouge by the owner of the only available field. The KU team will open its 19907 season on Oct. 5 against William Jewell here. Many want the KU-MU game here but St. Joseph is making a bid for it. : Theodore Poehler, president of the Poehler Mercantile Co., died suddenly yesterday from appendicitis and peritonitis. He was only 43 years of age and the death costs the community one of its most prominent and popular citizens. The family is among the oldest and most influential in Lawrence and Douglas County.”
