Celebrating the vote

Congratulations to a Lawrence teen who is eager to participate in our democracy.

What better way to celebrate your passage into adulthood than to register to vote?

Most local teens probably won’t put a visit to the county courthouse on the agenda for their 18th birthdays, but Cori Allen, a senior at Free State High School, might just start a trend. She celebrated her birthday Tuesday by registering to vote.

“I think it’s the most important thing you can do once you’re 18,” she said.

There are many important aspects to taking on adult responsibilities, but making voting a priority is a good start. It shows an interest in the democratic process and becoming an informed citizen ready to cast an intelligent vote.

Registering to vote is just the first step, but it’s a step in the right direction. It’s great to see a Lawrence teen celebrating our democracy along with her 18th birthday.
