Angels clinch tie for West crown

Angels 9, Mariners 5

Anaheim, Calif. – The Los Angeles Angels moved to the brink of their third AL West title in four years.

Vladimir Guerrero hit a two-run homer, Garret Anderson had two hits and three RBIs, and Los Angeles beat Seattle to clinch at least a tie for the division crown.

Los Angeles built its lead over the second-place Mariners to 91â2 games. The Angels will try to become the first team to lock up a division title this season when Joe Saunders takes the mound against former Angel Jarrod Washburn on tonight in the second game of the four-game series.

The game was interrupted by a shouting and shoving match on the mound between the teams after Mariners reliever Jorge Campillo threw a pitch behind Guerrero’s head in the sixth inning.

Orioles 6, Rangers 3, 10 inn.

Arlington, Texas – Nick Markakis scored the go-ahead run on an error in the 10th inning as Baltimore beat Texas, their first meeting since the Rangers scored an AL record 39 runs in a doubleheader sweep last month.

While shortstop Michael Young spun and made a nifty stop of the grounder up the middle, Markakis beat the strong throw for a leadoff infield single. After going to second on a wild pitch by John Rheinecker (3-3), who didn’t retire any of the three batters he faced, Markakis scored to break a 1-1 tie when first baseman Brad Wilkerson couldn’t field Aubrey Huff’s grounder. Melvin Mora added an RBI single.
