A Journal-World study showed that drunken drivers were getting stiffer fines and longer jail and public-service sentences here. Local judges said the policy would be continued and even intensified in an effort to keep substance-abusers from getting behind the wheel. A tougher state law had gone onto the books July 1, and generally across Kansas, judges were found to be cracking down under the new provisions.

The annual Lawrence United Fund drive was about to begin with a record goal of $384,709. Joel Jacobs was chairman of the drive.
