Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Sept. 16, 1907: “Two children were poisoned by strychnine put in a closet to kill mice. It got mixed into some bread and butter that had been set to kill mice and the children ate some of it. Powerful emetics were used and the children are now all right. : Friday afternoon, Sept. 20, will be a school holiday here to allow children to attend the county fair. This is done all over the state where fairs are held, and the local fair is likely to be the best ever held here. Many fine horses are due here for fair races. : A splendid new feature of the gymnasium work at the university this year will be the work in the natatorium in the new gym. The pool is not large but will be busy and popular. It will be 20 by 50 feet with a depth of eight feet throughout. Swimming courses are planned. : A thief who entered the Ober store here was caught by means of automobile used by officers, who had little trouble running him down after he was sighted. Harry Jackson is now in jail.”
