Southwest edges South for city quad title

The Southwest Bulldogs defended their city quad volleyball title on Tuesday with a perfect night against their intra-city rivals.

The Bulldogs went 4-0 on the night and capped off their third straight title with a win over South.

Before the title match-up, the night’s tightest contest came in game two of South’s match against West. After taking the first game, 25-18, the Cougars had to fight off the Warhawks on three straight match points before finally prevailing, 28-26.

The opportunity for the game’s winning serve fell to Cougar freshman Kasey Waite, who stood at the baseline feeling a little bit of everything.

“I was really nervous,” Waite said. “But at the same time I wanted to get us the win and just get it over with.”

South’s win put it up against the Bulldogs, who beat Central, 25-8 and 25-7, along with West by the same scores.

The Bulldogs found themselves in a bit of a fight in the early goings of game one. The defending champs raced out to an early 11-3 lead, but watched as South countered with seven straight points to cut the lead to one.

After a timeout, the Bulldogs regrouped and put some distance between themselves and the Cougars and ultimately taking game one, 25-16.

Game two saw a similar struggle from the Bulldogs as South kept pace and tied the game at nine. Once again the Bulldogs regrouped and put together a 16-4 run to capture the title.
