Tigers keeping hopes alive

Tigers 12, Mariners 6

Detroit – Brandon Inge hit a tiebreaking homer in the sixth inning to help Detroit beat Seattle and move two games ahead of the Mariners in the American League wild-card race.

Ivan Rodriguez went 4-for-5 with a home run in the eighth for the Tigers, who entered the day trailing the New York Yankees by three games for the wild-card playoff spot.

Placido Polanco had three hits and drove in four runs and Timo Perez also had three hits for the Tigers, who have won the first two games of the three-game series.

Magglio Ordonez also drove in a pair of runs for Detroit.

The Mariners, who have lost 13 of their last 14, got home runs from Adrian Beltre and Yuniesky Betancourt.

White Sox 8, Twins 7

Chicago – Jim Thome hit his 497th career home run and added the go-ahead RBI single in the seventh inning. A.J. Pierzynski hit a pinch-hit two-run homer in the seventh to tie the game and Paul Konerko also homered for the White Sox. Torii Hunter homered and Jason Tyner drove in three runs as the Twins lost their season-high sixth straight game.

Orioles 11, Red Sox 5

Baltimore – Rookie Scott Moore hit a grand slam to cap a seven-run third inning against Daisuke Matsuzaka, and Baltimore ended a record 11-game home losing streak.

Tike Redman and Nick Markakis also homered for the Orioles, who won for only the third time in 18 games. The 11 consecutive home losses were the most for Baltimore since the franchise moved from St. Louis in 1954.

Indians 6, Angels 1

Anaheim, Calif. – C.C. Sabathia tied for the major-league lead with his 17th win, pitching his fourth complete game of the season to lead Cleveland over Los Angeles.

Cleveland’s lead over Detroit in the Central remained at five games.

Devil Rays 5, Blue Jays 4

St. Petersburg, Fla. – B.J. Upton’s pinch-hit two-run homer capped Tampa Bay’s four-run rally in the ninth.

Rangers 7, Athletics 3

Arlington, Texas – Hank Blalock homered and had three RBIs as Texas stretched its winning streak to four games.
