Baker football seeks first victory

? Coming off a season-opening loss to NCAA Div. II Missouri Western, the Baker University football team hopes to rebound today in its home opener against Culver-Stockton. Kickoff is 1 p.m. at Liston Stadium.

“Our team is ready for conference play,” fourth-year coach Mike Grossner said. “We outplayed Missouri Western, but handed them three turnovers for touchdowns. We cannot make those mistakes and expect to win against good football teams.”

Missouri Western returned two long fumbles for touchdowns in the first quarter to upend Baker, 42-24, last week.

Culver-Stockton (0-1) opened last week with a 38-21 loss to Avila.

Senior running back Frank Owens had 21 carries for 94 yards and a TD to lead Baker’s ground game in the season-opening loss. Sophomore quarterback Mack Brown completed 12 of 21 passes for 137 yards and had a TD run.

At halftime of today’s game, Baker’s Wildcat mascot will reveal its new uniform and name. Jan Schroeder, a longtime friend of the university, donated money for the new uniform.
