KU splits Sunflower Showdown with K-State

Behind senior Colby Wissel’s second straight first place finish to open the season, the Kansas University men’s cross country team took out Kansas State 39-21 Friday at a duel between the two schools in Lawrence Friday. The KU women lost 35-22.

Wissel crossed the finish line in 15:07.6, followed 35 seconds later by KU sophomore Bret Imgrund. KU senior Patrick McGowan, freshman Nick Caprario, senior Jason Schweitzer and sophomore Dan Van Orsdel took the fifth through eighth spots, respectively.

Senior Alicia McGregor was KU’s top finisher in the women’s race, coming in third with a time of 19:09.8. She was followed by fellow senior Lisa Morrisey nearly 26 seconds later. The women’s race was won by K-State’s Beverly Ramos, with a mark of 18:23.4.

Paul Hefferon, who was the runner-up at the Bob Timmons Invitational, and Lauren Bonds, who was KU’s top runner in that race, did not compete for the Jayhawks.

The Jayhawks are off for two weeks, returning to action on Sept. 29 at the 22nd annual Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn. It is the first meet that counts towards points for qualifying in the NCAA Championships, set for Nov. 19 in Terre Haute, Ind.
