BYU sinks KU soccer

There might not be a tougher way to end a soccer match for a goalkeeper.

After playing 98 minutes of scoreless soccer, thanks in large part to a stellar performance by Kansas University senior goalkeeper Colleen Quinn, the Jayhawks lost to 19th-ranked Brigham Young in overtime when junior forward Katie Larkin scored on a penalty kick to give the Cougars a 1-0 victory.

Larkin kicked the winner swiftly along the ground to the back left corner, and Quinn, who guessed wrong, felt the brunt of the loss after recording 11 saves and keeping her teammates in the match.

“Colleen played awesome,” coach Mark Francis said. “The game should have been over in regulation, to be honest, with the chances (BYU) had.”

Francis said Quinn, who had eight saves after halftime, when the Cougars began to dominate possession and fired 13 shots, made the game close.

“We didn’t deserve to win that game,” Francis said after the Jayhawks (0-2-1) were out-shot, 19-8, by the Cougars (2-0).

Like Francis, Quinn’s teammates did not blame her one iota for the loss or guessing wrong on the penalty kick.

Kansas midfielder Erin Ellefson, left, works her way around Brigham Young defender Karen Cook in the first half. BYU beat the Jayhawks, 1-0 in overtime, Thursday at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex.

“I don’t think she’s to blame at all,” senior midfielder Nicole Cauzillo said. “I think it’s just disappointing. It’s kind of a stab in the heart.”

On the contrary, Quinn’s teammates credited her for her performance.

“It was awesome,” Cauzillo said of the keeper’s play. “I love that girl. I give her all the credit today. She’s my MVP.”

Quinn was happy for the words of encouragement, but disappointed the Jayhawks have failed to get a victory in three tries this season.

“We can’t be complacent,” she said.

Francis told his players they didn’t do enough to win and deemed their performance in the home opener unacceptable.

“We’ve got to find out what we’re made of because right now we’re struggling a little bit,” Francis said.

Kansas will play host to SMU at 1 p.m. Sunday.
