Established artist to unveil ‘whole new idea’ at festival

Metal sculptor Nancy Reese works on one of her sculpture pieces Tuesday at her studio southeast of Lawrence. In the foreground are two of her smaller sculpture scenes, and on the wall in background at right is one of her larger hanging pieces.

Three small artworks depict rural scenes by metal sculptor Nancy Reese. Reese is preparing pieces for Sunday's Fall Arts and Crafts Festival in South Park.

After 32 years perfecting and mastering her craft, artist Nancy Reese decided it was time to experiment.

In January, she transitioned from small-scale, neutral-colored sculptures to large, colorful, contemporary wall hangings.

“It’s a whole new idea,” she said. “No one has done things like this, I don’t think; it’s rather frightening.”

Reese, of Lawrence, will unveil her new creations Sunday at the 28th annual Fall Arts and Crafts Festival in South Park, 1141 Mass. Her trademark sculptures will also be on display.

The festival is an opportunity for more than 200 artists and artisans to showcase their work. Duane Peterson, special events supervisor for Lawrence Parks and Recreation, said he expects 8,000 to 10,000 people from several states to visit the festival.

Reese said people in Lawrence know her for her metal sculptures that capture a “whimsical scene.” Her new work maintains the same mixed media – steel, brass and clay – but she has added original ceramic pieces. She still has to practice patience with the larger pieces, she said, because she gilds each with gold and silver leafing.

“I used to have tiny pieces to fight with; now I have big pieces to fight with,” she said.

The festival is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. There will be food concessions, live entertainment and activities for children, such as a moonwalk, wading pool, and arts and crafts booths.

The five bands that will play at the park’s gazebo are Billy Spears and the Bear Bellies at noon; Lonnie Ray Blues Band at 1 p.m.; Billy Ebeling and the Late for Dinner Band at 2 p.m.; Two Much Fun at 3 p.m.; and the Konza Swamp Band at 4 p.m.

Francis Sporting Goods and Jayhawk Trophy will sponsor the fifth annual Massachusetts Street Mile run, which begins at 10 a.m. Adult runners will be charged $12, children $10, and walkers $5.
