Additional charges filed in De Soto fatality

High school senior dies from injuries

Johnson County District Attorney Phill Kline today filed new, more severe charges against a 19-year-old De Soto man accused in what authorities say was a hit-and-run fatality accident Friday night in De Soto.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s office announced Monday that a 17-year-old girl had died from injuries she suffered in the accident. According to De Soto school district, she was Griselda Del Real, a senior at De Soto High School.

According to Johnson County District Court records, 19-year-old Johnny Landa was charged Saturday with aggravated battery-reckless-great bodily harm. His bond originally was set at $150,000, and on Monday a judge increased it to $500,000. This morning, Kline filed new charges: second-degree murder and obstruction of the legal process. The battery charge was dropped.

Sheriff’s officers responded at 10:40 p.m. Friday night to the 8200 block of Ottawa Street to a report that someone had fallen from a moving vehicle. They discovered that Del Real had suffered critical injuries, and any vehicles involved had left.

Del Real was taken to Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

Officers later arrested Landa, who they believe drove the vehicle.

Alvie Cater, a De Soto school district spokesman, said counselors were available for students at the high school this morning.

“We had about 20 students who took advantage of that this morning, and (counselors) are going to continue to be there as a student-support system,” Cater said.

He also said students were raising money for Del Real’s family to help pay funeral expenses.
