Gardner clips Baldwin
Baldwin City ? Gardner-Edgerton 14, Baldwin 7
Gardner-Edgerton capped an 11-play, 72-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run with 40 seconds to play, and the score proved decisive in a 14-7 high school football victory Friday over Baldwin.
“I am so proud of our kids right now,” BHS coach Mike Berg said. “They played their hearts out. They are going to be sore in the morning. They went against a good, physical ball club. I think Gardner wore us down in the second half. We just had two crucial turnovers and a couple of penalties that really hurt us.”
Gardner scored first when it took advantage of a Baldwin fumble late in the second quarter.
Gardner recovered two Baldwin fumbles late in the half and converted the second one into a touchdown with 37 seconds left in the half.
The Bulldogs tied the score when junior Sam Beecher broke a 75-yard run for a third-quarter touchdown.
Neither team moved the ball much during the fourth quarter until Gardner’s final drive. Senior Nick Pierson scored his second touchdown to seal Gardner’s victory.
Baldwin will play host to Paola on Friday at Liston Stadium. Gardner will travel to Spring Hill.
