The Southwest Bulldog eighth-grade girls basketball team welcomed Washburn Rural on Monday to Southwest Junior High for its second game of the season.
Despite falling behind early, the Bulldogs rallied in their home opener for 24-21 victory.
Washburn Rural brought a tough press against the Southwest guards early in the game. The pressure forced turnovers early, which Washburn Rural converted to points for and early lead.
Washburn-Rural maintained the pressure through the third quarter, holding Southwest to just 10 points through the third giving it a 16-10 lead.
In the fourth quarter the Bulldogs bounced back by displaying their own tough defense. The effort limited Washburn-Rural to just five points in the final eight minutes to allow the Bulldogs with a 14-point fourth quarter effort -- to forge ahead for the victory.
Southwest eighth-grader Jackie Garcia took control of the game by driving into the lane for short jump-shots, while dishing the ball for two assists. Garcia ended the game with eight points. Carolyn Bandles' excellent defense helped prevent Washburn Rural from rallying in the fourth quarter. Ashley Rasmussen starred on defense with three
steals and a number of clutch rebounds, while Daisy Torres contributed to the Southwest
comeback with six points, two assists and two big free throws with time winding down.
