Osborne: Callahan’s firing not imminent

? Nebraska interim athletic director Tom Osborne said Monday that a comment he made in a television interview last week is not to be interpreted as a sign that he has decided to fire coach Bill Callahan.

A reporter for Omaha television station KETV asked Osborne whether the walk-on program Osborne relied on as a coach should be restored to “old levels.”

Osborne’s answer: “That will depend somewhat on the new coaching staff, because they have to implement, and I can’t coach from the athletic director’s position.”

In a statement issued through the athletic department chief communications officer, Randy York, Osborne said no decision on the football staff would be made until after the season.

The statement said Osborne was trying to make the point that any “new” staff working for the first time with him would implement the walk-on program, not him.
