Fifth-grade Hurricanes take out Cougars

The fifth-grade Toy Bowl championship featured the Cougars and the Hurricanes battling for the top spot. The Cougars struck early, but the Hurricanes took to the ground and managed to take the game in the third quarter with a 22-6 victory on Sunday at Youth Sports Inc.

The Cougars opened the game with much of the momentum. Defensively the Cougars stopped the first two Hurricane drives deep in their own territory. Offensively, the Cougars got their own running game going as quarterback Darian Cooper had a run of 40 yards. That run put the Cougars at the Hurricane goal line, where Cooper punched the ball in for a touchdown and a 6-0 lead.

That score held into the second quarter until the Hurricanes got back into the game. Anthony Bonner took the ball down the right side of the field for a 45-yard touchdown. The conversion gave the ‘Canes an 8-6 lead. The Hurricanes added a second touchdown just before halftime when Bowen Cunningham raced 40 yards for the touchdown. Tripp Wright added his second conversion of the day for a 16-6 lead at halftime.

The Cougars hung tough through the game, but Anthony Bonner put the finishing touch on the game in the fourth quarter with a 20 yard touchdown run.
