Haskell to celebrate early Senior Day

It’s just late October, but it’s already Senior Day for Haskell Indian Nations University’s football team. The Fightin’ Indians will meet Peru (Neb.) State today in their final home game.

Kickoff will be at 1 p.m. at Haskell Stadium.

Three seniors – all starters – will be honored during today’s halftime: safety Antonio Hayes, wide receiver Hunter Smith and offensive tackle Dale Black Cloud.

Hayes, a 6-foot, 210-pound native of Jacksonville, Fla., is the Indians’ leading tackler this year.

Smith, a 6-foot, 190-pound Colcord, Okla., product, is the top receiver.

Black Cloud, a 6-foot, 300-pounder from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is part of the offensive line that earned kudos following last week’s 26-24 victory over Southwestern Assemblies of God U.

“They didn’t allow any sacks. They didn’t have any holding penalties,” HINU coach Eric Brock said of his O-linemen. “They were our players of the game.”

The other offensive linemen are junior Daniel Lemos, sophomores Matt Dake, Adam Staley and Jered Jones and freshman tight end Joel Chastain, who also caught a 16-yard pass in last Saturday’s victory over SAGU.

“Chastain played every down on offense,” Brock said, “and he played very well.”

Haskell (1-6) knocked off SAGU in a battle of winless teams last week, but today’s task figures to be tougher. The Bobcats have lost two in a row, but one was a 30-28 heartbreaker to Benedictine. The Nebraskans are 4-4 overall.

Peru State and Haskell have had one common opponent. Peru blasted Bacone, 30-0, in Peru, Neb., the week before Haskell went to Muskogee, Okla., and dropped a 47-14 decision to the Warriors.

HINU’s last two games will be on the road – next Saturday against Avila in Kansas City, Mo., and Nov. 10 at Waldorf College in Forrest City, Iowa.
