Commission wants funds for kindergarten, teacher pay

? A commission that works on school finance has recommended the phase-in of full-day kindergarten and a raise in teacher pay.

“It’s the two areas where could make the most difference,” Rochelle Chronister, chairwoman of the 2010 Commission said today.

The package would cost nearly $49 million for the fiscal year that starts July 1, 2008. Chronister said higher-than-expected tax revenue coming into state coffers could probably fund the increase.

The commission will forward its recommendation to the Legislature which convenes its 2008 session in January.

Statewide, about two-thirds of kindergarten students are enrolled in full-day programs. In Lawrence, eight of the 15 public elementary schools offer full-day kindergarten.
